How to Pull off Black Lipstick: 4 Big Tips!

How to pull off black lipstick

It’s no secret that black is my favorite color. If you take a look at this blog design, the whole aesthetic is black and white. So of course, that love extends to makeup. I have black hair, I wear black clothes, so why not black lipstick?

Last October, I told you that I have an affinity for dark, vampy shades, and shared some of my fall favorites. I didn’t include black, because a lot of people find it intimidating and think they can’t pull it off. But of course you can! It’s all about how you wear it. Today, I’ll show you a few tricks I keep in mind to make it look the best I can, and feel comfortable wearing it!

1. Put on a Full Face

Black is obviously a very bold lip color, so slapping it on an otherwise makeup free face can appear a little off balance. I don’t look good with black lipstick if I don’t apply a full face of makeup. I want my skin evened out, and I NEED that concealer under my eyes. Without concealer, black lipstick will enhance any dark under eye circles or veins. It helps to glam up the look a bit too! Put your lashes on, style your hair. This takes the look from dull to edgy and fashion forward!

2. Choose the Right Eyeshadow Color

This really depends on your taste, but what I like the best for me? Is when I stray away from neutral eyes and pair it with bold shades. My go-tos are rosy tones or edgy red/coppery colors.

This contrast really helps. The black is already stripping color from your face. You know that unspoken rule, where when you wear dark lips, you should go light on the eyes? That doesn’t apply with black. Because black is neutral (not a cool or warm tone) it can actually look good with intense eyes. Choosing a bright eye actually helps bring color back in your face and keep it from looking washed out.

3: Add some blush and highlight

We’re taking any opportunity to add color, so don’t forget to put some blush on and finish it off with highlighter. Adding a healthy-looking glow puts some life back into your face.

4. Rock it with a Colorful Shirt

Wearing all black or all white is always an easy and perfectly good look with this. But, you can also have some fun with it by letting your black lips pop against an unexpected colorful shirt! See the example in action above.

What’s your take on black lipstick?

I’m absolutely obsessed with how it looks! I’ll admit I don’t wear it everyday, but it’s a fun color in my collection to whip out for a concert or festival. I especially love it this time of year to wear to a pumpkin patch or haunted house! If you’re not into wearing costumes, but still want to get in the spooky mood or rock some dark glam, this is a good option!
